Kiernan, Southend United sign Rangers defender

Southend United sign Rangers defender

League One side Southend have signed defender Rob Kiernan from Rangers for an undisclosed fee. He has signed a two-year deal with the Shrimpers.

Kiernan started his career with Watford, but he never made a first-team appearance for the club. While he was with the Hornets he went out on loan to Kilmarnock, Yeovil Town, Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers. In 2011 the Rickmansworth-born defender signed for Wigan Atheltic.

However, he found it hard to break into Wigan’s first-team, so he spent time out on loan at Accrington Stanley, Burton Albion, Brentford, Southend and Birmingham. He broke into the first-team midway through the 2014-15 season, but he couldn’t help the club avoid relegation to League One.

Kiernan signed for Rangers in 2015 for a fee in the region £200,000. He played 45 times in his first season for the club, but he was criticised for his performances alongside Danny Wilson. Kiernan played 31 times last season, as Rangers finished third in the Scottish Premiership.

Kiernan said this about his move “It’s been a little bit of a long process but it’s good to get it over the line and I’m looking forward to getting going,”

“I’ve worked with Phil before and he’s been great to me. My loan got cut a bit short and I got recalled back to Wigan but it’s nice to link up again and hopefully, I can do well for him.

He added, “I’m glad it’s all sorted and I can get ready for the season ahead.”

The Shrimpers kick-off their campaign against Blackburn who were relegated from the Championship last season. Southend will be looking to build on last seasons performance where they narrowly missed out on a play-off spot.
