Leeds United said ready to meet £6.4m for La Liga striker

According to the Mirror’s Bill Cooper earlier this Friday evening, Leeds United are ready to tough it put with Swansea in the fight for Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo.

With many Leeds fans realistically thinking that a ‘deal’ or even ‘interest’ in such a luminary target as Negredo was dead in the water, it appears that this may not the case. According to the Mirror, Leeds United are right there, right in the mix for the talented frontman.

Cooper says in his article that Leeds boss Christiansen is hoping to make Negredo the Whites 10th signing of a quite hectic summer of signings. Already players such as Ezgjan Alioski, Samu Saiz and Caleb Ekuban have joined the Christiansen revolution, now Christiansen wants Spaniard Negredo to sign up at the tenth Elland Road signing of the summer.

Negredo is already in talks with Swansea but Cooper says that Leeds are ready to meet La Liga side Valencia’s £6.4 million asking price – with the Whites Technical Director Victor Orta said to be a key figure who could have a very important part to play should the Whites be serious about bringing Negredo to Elland Road.

Madrid-born 31-year-old Negredo came up through the Rayo Vallecano youth set-up before a free transfer into the Real Madrid set-up at the start of July 2005. He never made it at Real, transferring to UD Almeria at the start of July 2007 – he scored 31 times in 73 games before Real exercised an option and brought him back to the capital two years later for around £4.2 million.

This move was merely a cosmetic move, with the striker moving out six weeks later to Sevilla for a £12.75 million transfer fee. 85 goals in 180 games for Sevilla saw him brought to the English Premier League by cash-rich Manchester City for a reputed £21 million. Despite 23 goals in 49 games, Negredo was sold to current club Valencia for £23 million – the player moving after a successful season-long loan deal from the Citizens.

He spent last season in the Premier League with Middlesbrough, playing 39 games for Boro in their relegation-haunted campaign – a campaign where he scored 10 goals and provided four assists.

Despite being “already in talks” with Swansea, the Mirror’s Bill Cooper says that Negredo “is willing to listen to what Leeds have to offer before making a decision on his future.”
