Grimsby hit by injury blow to key midfielder

RUSSELL Slade’s Grimsby Town side have been rocked by the news that influential midfielder Jamey Osborne will be out until Christmas with a knee ligament injury, reports the Grimsby Telegraph.

The 25-year-old, who has impressed since joining the Mariners from Solihull Moors in January, fell in training and has ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament.

Mariners’ physio Dave Moore confirmed to the Telegraph that the player will be out for five months, although the former Town defender believes that the news could have been even worse for Osborne.

He said: “It’s a significant injury, but it’s not as bad as we first feared. His leg will be immobilised for the next few weeks before he starts his rehabilitation. We are hoping that he will be able to return around Christmas time.”

Osborne played 19 times for the Mariners last term, scoring once in a 4-2 victory over Yeovil Town at Blundell Park.

He caught the eye earlier in the pre-season campaign with a stunning 60-yard lobbed goal against Cleethorpes Town at the Bradley Community Stadium in Grimsby.

Joining Osborne on the treatment table will be his former Solihull team-mate Akwasi Asante.

The ex-Birmingham man injured his groin towards the end of last season and has required an operation that will see him sidelined until September.

Asante also scored once for the Mariners last season, in a 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley.

Former Scunthorpe midfielder Sean McAllister will complete a trio of Mariners’ stars to miss their final pre-season outing against Wigan as he sits out with a knock sustained earlier this week – although he is expected to be available for the season opener at Chesterfield.
