Sunderland join Sheffield Wednesday in fight to sign Alan Hutton

Sunderland have joined Sheffield Wednesday in the race to sign Aston Villa’s Alan Hutton according to a report from the Mirror.

It seemed like Hutton had given his career at Aston Villa a shot in the arm last season. While he under performed for the Villains in the Premier League, he ended up playing rather well for them when they dropped into the Sky Bet Championship, being one of their better players last season even when the club disappointed by failing to challenge for promotion.

But Hutton faces fierce competition to get back into the first team this season due to the likes of James Bree and Ritchie De Laet, both of which will be determined to make themselves a key player going into next season. This is why Sheffield Wednesday have been interested in signing the defender for a while, especially as it would add to the growing Scottish international contingent already at the club. These reports have been around for a while and it seemed like they would be the team to sign him if anyone did.

But while the Owls would love to add Hutton to their squad, they will now be facing some stiff competition as Sunderland are now in the race to sign him. The 32-year-old defender is already familiar with the Black Cats having had a decent loan spell with them back in 2010 and that might make them the leaders to sign him. However with both interested teams chasing promotion this season though, Hutton has a great choice of where to move to.
