Birmingham City join Leeds United in race for Bristol City defender

Birmingham City are interested in signing Bristol City centre back Aden Flint, according to ClubCall.

The 28-year-old has also been heavily linked with Birmingham’s divisional rivals Leeds United, who are also said to be keen on signing Robins team-mate Joe Bryan.

The Blues are yet to make a bid, but it is understood that the 6′ 5″ defender is on Harry Redknapp’s list of potential targets, alongside Aston Villa’s former skipper Tommy Elphick.

The club missed out on signing veteran central defender John Terry to bitter rivals Villa earlier this month, and it is believed that Flint is among a selection of players being tracked with the hope of reinforcing Redknapp’s defensive options in preparation for the new season.

The player is a key man for Lee Johnson’s Bristol City; he played in all 46 Championship fixtures last season for the Robins, and is approaching a double century of appearances for the club.

He moved to Ashton Gate from local rivals Swindon Town in 2013, where he played 64 times, scoring on four occasions.

Before that, the Pinxton-born player was with non-league side Alfreton Town, where he was a standout player, and the subject of interest from Derby County and Luton Town among others.

Birmingham City have been active in the transfer window so far this summer, having signed goalkeeper David Stockdale from Brighton and Hove Albion, Barnsley defender Marc Roberts, and Angers’ Chiekh N’Doye on a free transfer.

Similarly, new Leeds head coach Thomas Christiansen has acted quickly to prepare his squad for the new season.

The Whites have signed a host of players this summer, including former Newcastle United midfielder Vurnon Anita and Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald.
