Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season winning streak ended by late Farense equaliser

Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season winning streak was ended tonight after Farense scored a late equaliser to force a 1-1 draw.

The Owls have been in fine form this pre-season, picking up wins over Alfreton Town, Mansfield Town and Portimonense before facing Farense today. However while they would have liked to continue that winning streak in the next match of their tour in Portugal, they were denied by a late equaliser.

For most of the match, Wednesday were the team putting the pressure on though they couldn’t get that all important goal in the first half. They did think they had taken the lead when a Ross Wallace free kick seemed to find Sam Winnall perfectly in the box who then headed in. However his celebrations were stopped prematurely when the flag on the other side of the pitch went up, keeping the game goalless for now.

But hopes of Wednesday keeping their winning streak alive were kept alive when they took the lead with little over ten minutes to go. Fernando Forestieri and Steven Fletcher are likely to be the two strikers leading the front line going into next season, especially as they were the top goalscorers for both of last seasons. So it will have been great to see them link up well as Forestieri put in a good ball for Fletcher who would then hit it home.

But that winning streak was topped in the last few minutes by an impressive Ferense side. Jorginho managed to pull off an impressive free kick where he was able to curl the ball over the wall and into the back of the net. It was a great strike and well worthy of finishing the game off.

This isn’t a massive blow for Wednesday’s momentum as they are still unbeaten going into their next pre-season match against Vitoria de Setubal, a game that will take place on the 22nd July.
