Barnsley seal deal for Premier League starlet

Championship side Barnsley have completed the signing of Everton midfielder Joe Williams on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old’s arrival was announced on the club’s official website on Thursday.

Williams enjoyed a successful season with the Toffees’ under-23 side last year, helping the club to win the Premier League 2 title, and will be looking to carry this momentum through to his on-field performances at Oakwell.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom told the club’s media that he has been tracking the player for some time, so to seal a deal to bring him to Yorkshire is a relief.

“We have been looking at Joe for a while and have been to see him play a few times.

“Joe will be a different type of player to what we have at the Club, as he has all the attributes and ability to be considered an all-round midfielder.

“We’re looking forward to him getting going and it’s important for him to now get some games in the remaining friendlies we have.”

The move sees a revival of the partnership between Everton and Barnsley, who have seen their players change hands regularly in recent seasons; England defender John Stones swapped Oakwell for Goodison Park in 2013 in what is arguably the most notable transfer between the two clubs.

And Heckingbottom has praised Everton for their cooperation in helping to push this latest signing over the line.

“We have had success in player recruitment from Everton in recent times so I have to thank them for continuing to trust us with that.”

Williams, who is capable of playing in a number of midfield positions, struggled with injury for a portion of the 2016/17 season, but stood out in the under-23 side upon his recovery with a number of stellar performances, and was rewarded with a spot on the bench in Ronald Koeman’s first team towards the end of the campaign.

Barnsley begin the new season with a tough trip to Bristol City on August 5th.
