Birmingham City could be set to miss out on signing LA Galaxy defender Ashley Cole, according to The Sun.
Birmingham have been linked with several players recently, including former Chelsea left-back Cole. The defender currently plays for MLS side LA Galaxy but could be tempted by a return to English football.
Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp recently said: “Ashley Cole is still in great nick. Someone mentioned him and I thought ‘That is an interesting player, for sure’. You can’t beat a bit of quality.
“And for me he was possibly the best left back in the world a few years ago at one time when he was at Chelsea. I know Ashley, he’s a great lad and he could certainly play at this level – no problem. It hasn’t really gone anywhere, I just mentioned it someone and like everything it ends up getting out.”
Despite admitting that the move for Cole hadn’t really materialised, Redknapp may not be able to sign the defender even if he wants to this summer. LA Galaxy are keen to hold on to Cole, who has made 40 appearances for the club since signing in 2016.
LA Galaxy head coach Curt Onalfo said: “He’s a really important part of our team, Ashley brings a level of experience. He’s certainly in my plans and I want to have him stay here.”[interaction id=”596f1e965ef522b21624d0e2”]
Cole, now 36, is a player with bags of experience in English football. He has 384 Premier League and 109 Champions League appearances to his name, having played 636 games altogether at club level. The defender also won 107 caps in a 13-year career with England.
Harry Redknapp is also reportedly still looking for a new centre-back after losing out to rivals Aston Villa in the race to sign John Terry.
