Aston Villa to compete with Premier League side for midfield maestro

Aston Villa and Burnley will go head-to-head this month to land Scottish midfielder James McArthur from Crystal Palace, according to HITC.

Reports of Villa’s interest in the 29-year-old playmaker surfaced at the start of July, but they now face stiff competition from Sean Dyche’s Burnley for his signature.

Fellow Championship side Hull City are also said to be keen.

McArthur is reportedly valued at around £2 million by the Croydon club, with new boss Frank de Boer willing to let the player leave as he does not see a future for him at Selhurst Park.

With Jack Cork leaving Swansea City for Burnley earlier this month, it remains to be seen whether Sean Dyche will cool his interest in the player, which could allow Villa to swoop in and capture his signature.

However, the lure of Premier League football with the Clarets might prove to be crucial, as it is unknown whether or not the 29-year-old is prepared to drop down a division this summer.

The Glaswegian is approaching a century of appearances for Palace since arriving from Wigan Athletic in 2014; he turned out 129 times for The Latics, and was a part of their historic FA Cup-winning side in 2013.

Before that, he made a name for himself in his native Scotland with Hamilton, playing for the SPFL club just under 170 times and notching eleven goals.

McArthur has also been a regular in the Scottish national side since 2010, with his most recent goal coming in 2018 World Cup qualifying against Lithuania last October.

Aston Villa kick off the new Sky Bet Championship campaign against relegated Hull City, before a trip to League Two Colchester in the Carabao Cup.
