Blackburn Rovers to make decision on former Birmingham City defender

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is set to make a decision on the future on former Birmingham City defender Paul Caddis in the coming days, according to The Lancashire Telegraph.

Caddis, 29, has spent his pre-season training with Blackburn following his release from Bury and could be set to sign for the club.  The defender has made appearances in both friendly matches that Rovers have played so far and was recently praised by Mowbray.

Following their relegation from the Championship last season, Blackburn will be looking to bounce straight back up at the first attempt.  Having released several players, manager Tony Mowbray has been working hard to add to his squad ahead of the new season beginning next month.  Mowbray has signed four players so far, with a striker on the way and a possible deal for Paul Caddis.

Caddis began his career with Scottish side Celtic, making 24 appearances before joining Swindon Town for an undisclosed fee in 2010.  The defender made 42 appearances in his debut season, regularly playing in midfield, but could not prevent his club’s relegation to League Two.

The following season, Caddis became Swindon’s captain and was very impressive as the club were promoted back to League One as champions.  The defender was named in the League Two Team of the Year.  His performances also earned him a move to Championship side Birmingham City, initially on loan for a season.

In January 2017, after 159 appearances for the club and 16 goals, Caddis was told by Gianfranco Zola that he was the club’s third-choice right-back.  His contract was then cancelled by mutual consent.

Caddis then joined League One side Bury on a short-term deal.  He made 13 appearances for the club, mostly playing in defensive midfield, before leaving at the end of the season.

Having played 295 games in his career, Caddis is a player with a lot of experience in several different leagues.  Blackburn Rovers’ current first-choice right-back is 19-year-old Ryan Nyambe, who may benefit from competing for a starting place with Caddis.
