Derby County bid £4m for Premier League midfielder

According to the Daily Mail, Derby County are currently making a bid thought to be worth £4 million for Leicester City’s Matty James.

The Foxes are thought to be prepared to offer James the chance to stay at the King Power Stadium for a long period of time with his contract expiring next summer. Derby County seem to have other ideas though and with the departure of midfielder Will Hughes to Watford for a fee of £8 million as the BBC reported, they need to sign a new midfielder to replace the England U-21 star.

James began his career as part of Manchester United’s Academy and signed professional terms with the Premier League side in 2009. During his time at Old Trafford, James was sent out on loan to Preston North End on two separate occasions where he managed to make 28 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Leicester City decided to bring the midfielder to the King Power Stadium in 2012 when they signed both James and Richie De Laet for a fee that is believed to have been undisclosed.

The 25-year-old unfortunately sat out for the whole of the 2015/16 season when the Foxes were crowned Premier League Champions after he had suffered an injury at the end of the previous season.

The central midfielder has made 87 appearances for Leicester City during the last five years, scoring on four occasions.

James spent a portion of last season on loan at Championship side Barnsley and he made 18 appearances for the Tykes.

Gary Rowett now seems to want to bring the young midfielder to Derby County and with the promise of consistent first-team football a possibility at the Rams, he could feel inclined to make a move to Leicestershire.

Given the fact that he has one year left on his contract with the Foxes, £4m may just be enough money to bring the midfielder to the iPro.
