Match Report: Wolves kick-start Nuno era with Bundesliga scalp

Wolverhampton Wanderers earned a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen in the first match of the Nuno Espirito Santo era. The game took place in Austria as the Championship side take in some pre-season training on the continent. A second half Nouha Dicko strike proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The first significant question all Wolves fans wanted to know right away was what system would be utilised. Nuno went with the 3-4-3 system in this clash, which received a resounding thumbs up from Conor Coady, who excelled in a central defensive role. Although on paper it was a good win against a decent side, it was a typical pre-season contest.

Bremen start their season two weeks after Wolves do, so it would be fair to say the Germans are behind their opponents in terms of fitness schedule. Nevertheless, it was the Championship side which began the brightest, with Ivan Cavaleiro squandering a decent opportunity in the opening minutes. Debutant Willy Boly then headed over when it seemed easier to score, whilst Ulisses Garcia tested Harry Burgoyne from distance down the other end.

A total of eight changes were made at half time by the Molineux club, including the introduction of Dicko. He wasted little time making an impact, Matt Doherty played in the pacey forward into the box and found the far bottom corner with an accurate finish. Big-money signing Ruben Neves was given the final half an hour to blow away the cobwebs and make an impression. Zlatko Junuzovic would strike the bar for Bremen direct from a free kick, and did exactly the same thing with only a few minutes left on the clock too. Wolves held on for a solid victory.

Wolves first half: Burgoyne, Batth, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Price, Saiss, Douglas, Zyro, Enobakhare, Cavaleiro.

Wolves second half: Ruddy, Bennett, Coady, Miranda, Doherty (Simpson, 59), Edwards, Saiss (Neves, 59), Deslandes, Ronan, Dicko, Mason.
