Lawrence, Rowett speaks out on Derby County link to Tom Lawrence

Rowett speaks out on Derby County link to Tom Lawrence

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph, Derby County manager Gary Rowett refused to comment on speculation linking the club with Leicester City forward Tom Lawrence. It had been reported that the Rams were eyeing up a £7million move for the Welshman, who impressed in the Championship on loan at Ipswich Town last season.

Given the fact that Tom Ince has been sold to Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town, it presents a void which needs filling at Pride Park. Rowett is undoubtedly scouring the market to locate that person, and it isn’t a shock to see them linked with someone such as Lawrence. £7million would represent decent value given how he is certainly proven at this level and still only 23.

Derby got their pre-season campaign underway last night as Rowett oversaw a 4-0 victory over Kidderminster Harriers. He acknowledged Lawrence’s talents but wouldn’t go as far as to say he was a definite target,

“He (Lawrence) is a good player, but I am sure most of the players you are going to mention to me are good players.

“Whether or not we are interested in those players it wouldn’t be fair for me to comment because they are all at other clubs.

“But we have got some good targets.”

It would be fair to say that Lawrence hasn’t made the impact he would’ve liked whilst with the Foxes, making a greater impression out on loan at lower levels. He was named as Ipswich’s Player of the Year last season, and whilst they wanted to re-sign him, they knew it wasn’t realistic.
