Premier League side keen on signing Reading’s England Under-20 international

Premier League side Crystal Palace are keen on signing Reading goalkeeper Luke Southwood, according to The Mirror.

Newly-appointed Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boeri is yet to put his own stamp on the squad following the departure of Sam Allardyce but is targeting several players.  One of these players is Reading goalkeeper Luke Southwood.

Southwood, 19, joined Reading at only eight-years-old and has been with the club ever since.  He has progressed through the youth sides, playing for the Under-18s and now the Under-23s.  In July of last year, the goalkeeper signed his first professional contract with Reading.

Last season, Southwood played 11 times for Reading’s Under-23 side in the Premier League 2, keeping one clean sheet.

Late last year, the goalkeeper was part of the England Under-20 team that won the Four Nations Tournament, playing in two games.  Southwood also made the squad for the Under-20 World Cup in South Korea this summer, as back-up to Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

England went on to win the competition, with Southwood becoming the first ever serving Reading player to win a World Cup at any level.

However, he could now be set to leave the Championship club, with Crystal Palace interested in signing him this summer.  Southwood has turned down a new deal at Reading and could leave the club on the cheap.

If Palace do end up signing the goalkeeper, they will have to pay a training compensation fee.  However, this will likely be less than Reading would want for Southwood, especially now that he has had success on the international stage.
