Swindon Town sign Sheffield United defender on loan

Chris Hussey has signed for The Reds on a season-long loan deal from Sheffield United.

The 28-year-old is David Flitcroft’s seventh signing of the summer as Town look to win promotion back to League One. The club reported that he trained with his team-mates in the morning. He will also be available for Swindon’s friendly against Swindon Supermarine.

Swindon weren’t the only team interested in the left-back. Plymouth, Blackpool and Portsmouth were all interested in signing Hussey on loan however, Swindon was his preferred choice. Hussey has worked with Flitcroft before while he was at Bury.

Hussey was originally the starting left-back at Sheffield United however, he was replaced by Northern Ireland international Daniel Lafferty. The left-back is obviously not part of Chris Wilder’s plans. Therefore if the loan move goes well Town may be able to sign him when his contract expires at the end of the season.

He started his career with AFC Wimbledon and made seventy appearances for The Dons. Hussey won Young Player of the year while he was with the club. He joined Coventry in 2010 after a successful loan spell with The Sky Blues. Since Coventry, he has gone on to play for Burton, Bury and Sheffield United.

Once the move was announced Hussey had some words to say. The 28-year-old said “I’m delighted to be here. It is a big club I’ve heard a lot of great stuff about it.” When asked about his style of play Hussey said this “My qualities are getting forward, putting crosses into the box, corners, free-kicks and I want to bring goals and assists to the team.”

The Hammersmith-born defender also admitted that Flitcroft was a big factor in him coming to the County Ground. He said, “Working with the gaffer again was a big attraction for me. He knows how to get out of this league having been promoted with Bury.”
