Ex-Swindon Town striker signs for rivals Oxford United

Oxford United have confirmed that ex-Swindon striker Jonathan Obika has signed for the club. The 26-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Oxford after he rejected a new contract from Swindon.

Obika started his career with Tottenham but he never made a first-team appearance for them. He went out on loan eleven times when he was at Spurs. Obika scored 25 goals for Swindon. Arguably his most important goal for The Reds was the fifth in a 5-5 draw against Sheffield United in the play-off semi-finals.

The Enfield-born striker is Pep Clotet’s first signing since taking charge. It was reported that negotiations had started with Michael Appleton but Clotet finalised the deal.

When the club announced the signing Pep Clotet said this: “We have a really good recruitment team here. Jon is someone the club has been monitoring for a while. He has a great pedigree, is able to play in a number of positions and gives us options up front. Therefore we are very pleased that he has agreed to join us. We’re eager to welcome Jon and begin working him so as to allow him to settle into the squad during pre-season.”

New signing Obika said “I’m delighted to have signed. It’s a club that is going places. Especially with the new Manager coming in and I’m happy to be part of it. Obviously, there is a rivalry with Swindon but people have made the move before and done well. All I want to do is come here, work as hard as possible in every game and look to score goals in a successful season.”

Oxford will be aiming to be at least knocking on the door of the play-offs after a successful first season back in League One. Obika will join new additions Fiacre Kelleher, Charlie Raglan and Scott Shearer at the Kassam Stadium.
