Millwall complete deal for Northern Ireland international defender

Millwall have today announced the signing of Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin. The 25-year-old, who left Fleetwood Town this summer after a five-year stint, has penned a two-year contract at The Den. He becomes Neil Harris’ fifth signing of the summer.

Since winning the Sky Bet League One Play-Off final against Bradford City in May, Harris has been busy improving his Millwall squad. James Meredith made the move from Bradford, not long after the play-off match. Tom Elliott joined from AFC Wimbledon, another League One club. More recently, Jed Wallace and George Saville returned to the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers, this time on permanent deals.

It was widely touted in the media of late that McLaughlin would make this move. Lewie Coyle made the loan move from Leeds United to Fleetwood Town, strongly indicating that there was no real prospect of McLaughlin performing a U-turn and remaining at Highbury Stadium. McLaughlin, who has 22 caps for his country, expressed his happiness at completing the move,

“I’m delighted to get everything signed. I first heard of Millwall’s interest towards the back end of last season, but I then went away on holiday and got married, so it took a bit of time – but I’m glad it’s all sorted now.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going. I just want to start and get to know my team-mates.”

Harris revealed that McLaughlin was his number one transfer target this summer, and that he’ll perfectly fit into the squad environment already in place at Millwall.
