Why Leeds loaning Coyle to Fleetwood is great news for Millwall

London News Online understands that Sky Bet Championship side Millwall hope to sign Fleetwood Town right back Conor McLaughlin before the end of the week. The Northern Ireland international is out of contract at Highbury Stadium, and the free agent is poised to link up with Neil Harris’ men.

The 25-year-old has left Uwe Rosler’s side after electing not to sign a new deal. This is no great surprise to the Sky Bet League One club, especially after they failed to achieve promotion out of the play-offs. Rosler has already replaced the player in the form of Lewie Coyle on a season-long loan from Leeds United.

Although McLaughlin is free to speak to any club he wishes, the signing of Coyle at Fleetwood certainly is significant. It means that the Cod Army are very much looking ahead, and even the slightest chance of McLaughlin returning is dismissed by effectively replacing him. Several EFL clubs were linked with a move for the highly-rated defender, but it would appear Millwall are winning this race.

Mahlon Romeo, another right back, has signed a new contract at Millwall recently. Nevertheless, club legend Harris is still determined to boost competition across his squad, and wants McLaughlin to add depth to this area of the pitch.

James Meredith and Tom Elliott have already made the move to The Den this summer from Bradford City and AFC Wimbledon respectively. Adding McLaughlin would mean that it is the third time Millwall have looked towards Sky Bet League One, the division they have just left, in order to improve their squad ahead of the coming campaign.
