Middlesbrough boss Monk identifies two target goalkeepers

Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk has identified two goalkeepers that are on his shortlist to sign this summer, according to The Mirror.

Monk, who has recently taken over as manager of Middlesbrough after leaving Leeds United, needs at least one new goalkeeper this summer with Victor Valdes and Brad Guzan leaving the club.

It is understood that Monk has identified Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood and Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as two players he would like to sign.  Middlesbrough were first linked with Westwood last month, but could now be set to follow up their interest with a firm bid of around £2 million.

Westwood, 32, has been a Sheffield Wednesday player since 2014 and has made 125 appearances over three seasons with the club.  He kept 17 clean sheets in his debut season, equaling the club’s record for most clean sheets in a season.  The goalkeeper was also a key player last season as Wednesday made the Championship play-offs, eventually losing to Huddersfield Town on penalties.

Johnstone, 24, is far less experienced than Westwood but has a lot of time to catch up to the Republic of Ireland international.  Currently, Johnstone is the back-up goalkeeper at Manchester United and is yet to make his senior debut for the club.  Johnstone spent last season on loan at Championship side Aston Villa and made 21 league appearances.

Sheffield Wednesday will not want to let their starting goalkeeper leave the club, especially if he were to move to a promotion rival.  However, Monk seems very keen on signing Westwood this summer and may offer enough to convince Wednesday to sell.
