Aston Villa sign Chelsea legend

Aston Villa have today signed ex-Chelsea and England captain John Terry, as confirmed by the club’s owner Dr Tony Xia on social media.

Owner Xia this morning tweeted this from his personal Twitter account:

It took no time for this to make it to the media and the signing of Terry has now been widely reported by many sources, including the likes of the BBC and the Telegraph.

Terry’s contract at former club Chelsea expired on 30th June and he will now drop down a division to join up with Aston Villa. The defender will no doubt be on big wages and will be hopeful of playing a big part in Villa’s promotion push back to the Premier League in the upcoming season.

Terry made the switch from West Ham to Chelsea early on in his career but has since been a one club man since, apart from a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest back in 2000 where he made just six appearances. This short loan spell is also Terry’s only taste of second tier football to date. Along with 717 appearances and 67 goals for Chelsea, Terry has also captained England and made 78 appearances between 2003 and 2012.

Despite interest from rivals West Brom and Birmingham City, Steve Bruce has succeeded in luring Terry to Villa Park. Villa fans were teased last month with an initial hint that something could be going on when Terry himself posted a picture of him playing golf alongside Steve Bruce and his son Alex on Instagram.

Bruce has shown an interest in Terry before back when he was on loan at Nottingham Forest in the 1999/2000 season. Bruce made a bid of £750,000 which was accepted by Chelsea at the time but Terry himself opted to stay at Stamford bridge. Almost two decades on, Bruce will now have Terry at his disposal.

Villa finished 13th in the Championship last season but are among the favourites to be promoted from England’s second tier this season. With recruits like Terry attempting to do their bit, fans and all involved with the club will be hopeful that they can do exactly what the bookies fancy them to do.
