Sunderland interested in signing long-serving former Manchester United man

Reports have suggested that Sunderland are interested in signing Birmingham City goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

Despite the Pole still having 2 years remaining on his contract in the Midlands he could be allowed to join The Black Cats for a minimal fee. This would suit Sunderland, who are lacking funds, despite this recently appointed Simon Grayson has assured fans that the squad needs strengthening.

The goalkeeper position in particular needs bolstering after Jordan Pickford made a £30 million move to Everton last week. Kuszczak would be a solid fit to replace him with the Premier League experience he gained at the likes of Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion.

The 35 year old started out his career with Hertha BSC, before moving on to West Brom and then of course United. Here he spent five years where he perhaps didn’t get much of a chance due to being kept out of the side by Edwin Van Der Sar.

He has also represented Poland throughout the youth teams as well as the senior team, for which he made his debut for in 2003 against Malta. However throughout a nine year career he only managed to make eleven appearances due to bad luck with injuries and competition from Wojciech Szczęsny.

His first team status is in doubt with the Blues as they have recently announced the signing of David Stockdale on a free transfer Brighton and Hove Albion. Stockdale was a mainstay in Brighton’s promotion season and has been described as a very impressive coup for Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham.
