Scottish club beat Hull City in race for former Tigers player

Aberdeen are set to announce Shaun Maloney to the Scottish side within the next 24 hours, beating Maloney’s former club, Hull City.

The Scottish national has played in a variety of leagues throughout his career – SPFL, Premier League, Championship and even MLS. He started his career back in the SPFL, playing for Celtic. He had been an addition to their youth team but made his début for the senior squad towards the end of April in 2001.

In the January transfer window of 2007, Maloney signed for Aston Villa for £1 million before returning to his former Scottish side in 2008. He started his campaign in the Premier League when signing for Wigan Athletic in 2011, becoming an addition towards their success of escaping relegation in 2013 and winning the FA Cup.

He was later introduced to MLS, playing under Chicago Fire. He spent eight months with the American side and achieving player awards before setting back to England where it was confirmed that the [now] 34-year-old would be playing for Hull City.

Maloney had been given a free agent from July 1, 2017, and had changed his mind about wanting to play at the KCOM Stadium for the upcoming season and chosen to go ahead with a medical at Aberdeen.

Derek McInnes, who has been the manager for The Dons since 2013 had said: “We’ve been going at Shaun’s pace out of respect for making his decision and dealing with Hull. But, all going well, we’ll maybe be able to make an announcement at the beginning of the week,”

“I don’t want to talk too much about him until we’ve signed him, but he is the type of player with the level of ability to handle the demands at our club. That’s important.” [Hull Daily Mail]
