Birmingham complete signing of Barsnley defender

Birmingham City have completed the signing of defender Marc Roberts from fellow Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley.

The Barnsley captain has made 84 appearances for the Championship side since signing for the then-League One side in May 2015. Roberts pens a five-year contract and follows in the footsteps of David Stockdale’s arrival at St Andrews, becoming Harry Redknapp’s second summer signing.

Making 40 appearances in the Championship for the Oakwell-based side, the former Wakefield, Worksop and Buxton defender established himself as a promising young talent during two years with Conference National side Halifax Town.

Roberts was linked with a move away from the Shaymen on multiple occasions, with Birmingham being one Football League club with interest in the defender. But Barnsley proved to be the eventual destination, with the defender signing in the summer of 2015.

Speaking after completing a three-year deal at Oakwell, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy winner said: “There’s been a lot of rumours and a lot of clubs interested but when a manager like Harry Redknapp comes along and asks for your signature you’ve got to take it seriously.

“There are some really good players here and from my point of view I want to help the football club get promoted. That’s the end aim.

“I pride myself on clean sheets. I’m a defender first and foremost. My job is to protect the goalkeeper and let the more technical players go and score goals.

“I’m a heart on my sleeve type of player. I’ll give my all every game and I want to win. I’m addicted to winning and it can only be a good trait.”
