McGeady, International winger backed for Sunderland move

International winger backed for Sunderland move

Everton winger Aiden McGeady is odds-on to join Sky Bet Championship side Sunderland with Sky Bet. The Republic of Ireland international spent time away from Goodison Park last season in a loan move to Preston North End.

He was of course taken to Deepdale by Simon Grayson, who is currently holding talks to become the next manager of Sunderland. Preston were widely expected to re-sign McGeady again, but the possible change of manager could see McGeady try his luck at the Stadium of Light next season.

Preston have now shifted out to 4/1 to lure the tricky wide man back to the club. It would appear he is quite likely to leave Everton once again this summer in search of more regularly first team football. With there being a good possibility of Ireland being in a World Cup this time next summer, the former Celtic forward understands the importance of playing regularly to impress national team boss Martin O’Neill.

The 31-year-old managed to amass 35 appearances on loan with Grayson’s current side last season, scoring eight goals in the process. The fact he is proven at this level, making him a full back’s worst nightmare, certainly means he will be a target for several sides at this level. Clubs such as Leeds United and Middlesbrough are priced at 9/1 to 14/1 to snap up the player, meaning those deals look somewhat unlikely. It looks as though Sunderland are in pole position, even more so should Grayson take the job in the North East in the coming hours.
