Leeds United target tells Greek club he is not interested in offer

Leeds United target Felix Wiedwald has turned down an offer from Greek side PAOK Saloniki, according to Kreiszeitung via Sport Witness.

Following the departure of Garry Monk, new Leeds United boss Thomas Christiansen is looking to put his own stamp on the squad before the new season kicks off in just over a month.  One of the players he is trying to recruit is Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald.

Wiedwald, 27, ended the season as Bremen’s first-choice goalkeeper but the club have moved to sign Jiri Pavlenka from Slavia Prague already this summer.  It is understood that Pavlenka will start the season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, meaning several enquiries came in for Wiedwald.

Along with Leeds, rivals Nottingham Forest and French side FC Nantes also reportedly asked about the goalkeeper but he now seems likely to join Leeds after informing his club that he wants to leave.

PAOK Sporting Director Lubos Michel has reportedly confirmed that the club won’t be signing Wiedwald this summer after they made him an offer.  It is understood that the goalkeeper informed Michel he didn’t want to move to the Greek side via text message.

This could leave Leeds in pole position to land Wiedwald this summer, with Nantes also pulling out of the race following the appointment of former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri.

As of two days ago, Leeds had made a “firm enquiry” for the player but there was no confirmation about whether there was a bid on the table from the Championship side.
