Birmingham set to bid £5 million for defender after missing out on Terry

Birmingham City are set to bid £5 million for Barnsley defender Marc Roberts after missing out on the signing of John Terry, according to The Sun.

Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp went head-to-head with rivals Aston Villa to sign Terry this summer but looks to have missed out on the defender.  It is understood that Terry has rejected offers from Birmingham and a Chinese Super League team to sign for Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa.  The former Chelsea skipper believes that Villa can get promoted to the Premier League this season.

This means that Birmingham have had to look elsewhere, and now look set to bid £5 million for Barnsley captain Marc Roberts.  Premier League side Burnley have also been linked with Roberts this summer and also bid £5 million, Barnsley’s asking price, for the player.  However, Birmingham are set to offer a better contract.

Roberts began his career in the lower leagues of English football, having spells with Wakefield, Worksop Town and Buxton before signing for Conference Premier side Halifax Town in 2013.  He spent two seasons with the club, making 93 appearances in all competitions and scoring an impressive 10 goals.  This led to a move to League One club Barnsley in 2015.

The defender won promotion to the Championship in his first season with Barnsley and helped to keep the team in the league this season.  He also became first-team captain in January of this year, following Conor Hourihane’s move to Aston Villa.

Roberts has made 85 appearances for Barnsley in two seasons at the club, scoring five goals along the way.  However, he looks set to leave the club this summer.
