Blackburn keen to swoop for Bradford defender despite Championship interest

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Blackburn Rovers are hoping to sign out of contract Bradford City defender Tony McMahon. The former Middlesbrough man has been offered an extension at Valley Parade but he has yet to commit his future to Stuart McCall’s side for next season.

Clubs in the Sky Bet Championship are said to be keen on a move for the versatile 31-year-old, however Mowbray is said to be confident of persuading the player to make the move to Ewood Park, remaining in Sky Bet League One for another season at the very least.

Mowbray is no stranger to McMahon, having previously worked him with during their time together at the Riverside Stadium. Over the two years, the Bishop Auckland-born player has played a big role in helping the Bantams become one of the top sides in the third tier, with only Millwall separating them from a place in next season’s Sky Bet Championship after defeat in the play-off final at Wembley.

Bolton Wanderers, managed by Phil Parkinson, has took McMahon to Bradford, were believed to be frontrunners for the player but they have since signed another right back in the form of Mark Little from Bristol City. However that initial interest hasn’t distracted Blackburn in their pursuit for the ex-Sheffield United man. The Telegraph & Argus reports that Preston North End are also interested in the player too. Their manager Simon Grayson remains odds-on favourite for the Sunderland job, so that could possibly make any deal slightly more complicated if the rumours are to be believed.
