Leeds United linked with Icelandic international: 5 things to know

Leeds United have been linked with Granada defender Sverrir Ingason, as we reported earlier today.

The defender, who plays at centre-back, could sign for Leeds this summer as the club look for a replacement for Kyle Bartley.  Bartley has returned to parent club Swansea City after his loan spell with Leeds ended at the end of last season and a return now looks unlikely.

With Leeds being linked with Ingason and the defender being a potential replacement for Bartley, we look at 5 things to know:

1) It has been said he is one of Iceland’s most promising defenders

Ingason, 23, is a highly-rated player with the potential to get a lot better.  At the end of the 2012-13 season with Breiðablik, the defender was named as the club’s most promising player before winning the club’s Player of the Season Award in 2013-14.  Ingason was also named in the Team of the Season for the highest division in Iceland.

After making the move to Norwegian side Viking in 2014, Ingason once again won a Player of the Season Award.

2) Ingason is an Icelandic international who played at Euro 2016

Ingason is an Icelandic youth international who made a total of 17 appearances between the Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 teams.  He also captained Iceland’s Under-21 side at the Under-21 Euros in 2015, before they eventually exited the competition after defeat to Denmark.

The defender made his full international debut in January 2014 against Sweden and has gone on to play 11 times for Iceland.  He was also part of the Iceland squad that went to Euro 2016 and surprised everyone with their performances.

Iceland made it to the quarter-finals of the competition, where they lost 5-2 to hosts France.  Ingason played in two games at the tournament: he made a brief substitute appearance in the win over Austria and came on at half-time in Iceland’s defeat against France.  He has also scored three goals for his country.
