Birmingham City’s transfer target is attracted to the English League

According to the Birmingham Mail, Ajax left-back Mitchell Djiks is reportedly interested in a return to England. Birmingham City are also thought to be interested in signing the six-foot-four defender.

As reported by the Birmingham Mail, Djiks took part in an interview with Dutch website VI where he suggested he would like a return to England.

The defender said “At the moment I do not know where my future lies, but some things are playing in the background,”

“I’ll wait, but I am ready and in top shape to make (a) sharp start.”

“I make no secret that the English league attracts me, from both sides it was a good half year in Norwich.”

The defender made 15 appearances on loan at Norwich City last season in the second half of the season earning plaudits in his time at Carrow Road.

The Canaries initially attempted to sign the full-back on a permanent deal during the January transfer window, but the defender was unprepared to make the commitment to a long-term contract. The defender moved on a loan deal until the end of the season, with a loan-to-buy clause included in his contract. Djiks’ buyout clause was rumoured to be around £4m but the Canaries decided not to trigger this clause and the defender subsequently returned to Amsterdam.

Birmingham City’s interest in bringing Djiks to St. Andrews will have been met with strong resistance in the Midlands. The Championship side already has quality two left-backs in their side in the experienced Jonathan Grounds and Cheick Keita who only signed for the side in January.

With Harry Redknapp taking the reigns at Birmingham for this upcoming season, he will want to build his own team. This could mean that Djiks may be well on his way to the Midlands and that Redknapp may begin to dispose of his current squad.
