In-work manager backed for Sunderland job after German takeover link

Union Berlin manager Jens Keller has been backed into second-favourite to become the next manager of Sunderland with Sky Bet. Preston North End manager Simon Grayson remains the odds-on favourite for the role, but a German consortium are said to be closing in on a takeover deal.

Earlier in the week, Keller could priced extremely high in the betting market, but is now as short as 5/1 to become the permanent successor to David Moyes at the Stadium of Light. Whilst these odds are necessarily a true reflection of how close he is to getting the job, it would appear there are whispers that he will be hired should the German takeover progress.

The Northern Echo understands that a deal could be agreed early next week to have the German consortium assume control of the football club from Ellis Short, who should pocket £100million from the sale. Jens Keller is currently in-work at Union Berlin, who missed out on promotion into the Bundesliga at the end of last season. The 46-year-old has also managed Stuttgart and Schalke, but has spent the past season managing in Berlin.

Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain initially favoured Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes getting the job but he rejected the opportunity. Grayson then soon entered the talking for the job, but he has been signing players for Preston, leading many to think he is happy to settle down for another season at Deepdale. With talks at an advanced stage over a takeover, Keller appears likely to be the man wanted to try and guide the Black Cats back into the Premier League at the first attempt.
