Former Blues captain returns to Birmingham City

Former Birmingham City captain Lee Carsley has returned to the club in a key coaching role, as announced by the club this evening.

Carsley is back at St Andrew’s as Birmingham’s head professional development coach. Within this role he will oversee the Blues U23s and Development Squad group.

The former Blues favourite will be assisted in his job by Richard Beale, who will remain in his role as senior professional development coach.

The Birmingham Board are keen to invest in the U23s and Development Squad and this move works in line with the aim of aspiring youngsters and adds more expertise in this area.

Beale has already done excellent work in bringing the likes of Nathan Redmond, Jack Butland and Demarai Gray through Birmingham’s academy. Now with the appointment of Carsley, City are trying to further enhance their proud tradition of providing players with high-quality coaching, mentoring and guidance. The ultimate goal is to provide players with a distinctive pathway from youth to First Team football.

Carsley joins the Midlands club after he left his role as U18s coach at Man City last month, a role where he created a favourable impression for himself and was highly regarded.
