Sunderland yet to approach number one manager target from Championship rival

The Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have yet to make any official or formal approach to speak to Preston North End manager Simon Grayson. This comes after the Mirror revealed that the Black Cats are looking to make their move for the 47-year-old.

The track record of Grayson at every club that he has managed understandably makes him an attractive proposition for any club searching for a new manager. He has achieved promotion at every club he has managed, all coming when guiding Blackpool, Leeds, Huddersfield and of course Preston out of League One and into the Championship.

It is believed that Grayson is away on holiday but is scheduled to return this weekend, which is when Sunderland may possibly make their intentions much more firmer. Preston begin their pre-season campaign at the start of next week as well, so Sunderland will want to get their man before he settles back into a routine. His current deal at Deepdale is believed to be a one-year rolling contract, so Sunderland will expect to be able to offer something more lucrative to try and tempt him to the Stadium of Light.

The Mackems have already seen an attempt to hire Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes fail, meaning they have switched their attentions elsewhere. Grayson has moulded Preston into a very competitive Sky Bet Championship side on a very limited budget. With Sunderland said to be suffering from their own financial issues, this is another factor in why Sunderland are looking towards Grayson, who played for clubs such as Leicester City, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers.
