John Terry reveals reasons for wanting to play for Championship side

John Terry wants to play in the Championship next season in order to add some more silverware to his collection, according to The Mirror.

Terry, 36, will be a free agent when his contract with Chelsea expires at the end of this month and already has several offers on the table from potential new clubs.  It is understood that the clubs compete at both Premier League and Championship level, but Terry would prefer to play in the latter this season.

Championship sides Aston Villa and Birmingham have both offered Terry contracts, and he must decide between the two local rivals.  It is believed that the defender is keen to play in the Championship as he wants to add more silverware to his collection before he retires.

Terry has also spoken to Premier League sides Bournemouth, Swansea and West Brom but is reluctant to sign for another club in the Premier League.  This is for two reasons: the defender does not really want to play against Chelsea after spending 22 years at the club and he would not enjoy playing to avoid relegation all season.  Terry would rather spend his last seasons as a player challenging at the top of the table.

After a spell with West Ham United, Terry joined Chelsea at the age of 14 and has been at the club ever since.  He has made 717 appearances for Chelsea and won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, one Champions League title and one Europa League title.  He has been captain of the club since 2004 and has also been captain of England.

Speaking about the prospect of signing Terry this summer, Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp said: “It is up to John – we would love to have him here. I have always been a great John Terry fan.

“I would love to have him at Birmingham – he would be a massive player for us. But there are other clubs interested.”
