Portsmouth complete the signing of Swindon Town defender

According to Portsmouth’s official website, defender Nathan Thompson has signed for Portsmouth on a free transfer from Swindon Town.

The 26-year-old had been a Swindon Town player for all of his footballing career. He joined their youth academy from a young age and has stayed at the club until now. Nathan Thompson signed a professional contract with Swindon Town back in April 2009 at the young age of 17. But he didn’t make his professional debut until the 5th October 2010, when Thompson came on as a 27th minute substitute for injured Scott Cuthbert as Swindon Town beat Torquay United 2-0 in the Football League Trophy.

He made his full league debut just less than one month later against Charlton Athletic. Swindon Town lost 3-0 that day but Nathan Thompson did play the full 90 minutes.

Thompson has been a professional for just over eight years now and having spent all eight of those years at Swindon Town, it’s clear he wants a change in his career. The Englishman is a defender by trade but he is also very comfortable in a midfield role.

In an interview, Portsmouth assistant manager, Joe Gallen said, “It’s nice to get the first signing over the line and we’ve brought in a very talented and experienced League One performer. We’ve got every confidence in Nathan that he’s going to do extremely well for Pompey”

Gallen then went on to say, ““He’s a good ballplayer and is an excellent talker and motivator – and he can play in a number of positions.”

Nathan Thompson made a total of 187 appearances for Swindon Town scoring four goals in that time. Portsmouth fans will be glad to hear he looks like a long-term addition to the squad as he’s only 26 years of age, so he’s still got a good 8 or 9 years left in him at least.
