Port Vale have signed Rob Lainton from Bury on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper started his career with Bolton but was most recently with Bury. While he has been at the club since 2013, though there was a gap when he was released in the summer of 2016 only to be re-signed later on that year, he was only their number one for a short period of time and spent much of his time on the bench.
He will be hoping that he can finally claim the regular starting spot at Port Vale now that he has signed a two-year deal with the club. They have had issues with the goalkeeping position ever since they sold Jak Alnwick to Rangers in the January transfer window and were forced to rely on stop-gap solutions in the second half of the season. But now they have a guy who can be a regular for them going forward which solves one headache going into next year.
After the signing was completed, Lainton said: “It feels great to be honest with you, I’ve been speaking with the club for a couple of weeks now and I just can’t wait to get started.”
“Now I’m here at Port Vale hoping to be here as long as I can and help the club go back up.”
“I want to stamp down the number one shirt and hopefully I can do that.”
“Hopefully, as a club, we can bounce straight back up to League One and then hopefully we can push on again from there and go to the next step again.
“We want to get as many clean sheets as we can and keep a solid base and then with the clean sheets wins come and keep us up the top end of the table.”
