Oxford turned down by Lindsay – manager uncertainty – open door for Leeds United

Many sources, such as the BBC and indeed The72, reported earlier today that Partick Thistle youngster Liam Lindsay and Oxford United were in talks about a move. That has now broken down with the Scottish youngster unwilling to move.

That unwillingness, said by another BBC article to have been caused by “uncertainty over Michael Appleton’s future,” is what has guided the young Jags actions at present, although some media commentators say that the deal isn’t dead in the water.

An initial bid by Oxford of “an initial £300,000” had ben accepted by the Scottish side and the 21-year-old had travelled south for talks. However, BBC Sport say that Lindsay is “reluctant to move” to Oxford United in the current circumstances “if a change of manager is imminent.”

Lindsay turned out 36 times for Partick in last season’s SPL competition, scoring six goals and providing one assist. But it was a mixture of his potential and consistent displays that drew attention of many but finally led to the concrete interest of Oxford United.

However, the youngster has also been courted by a bigger name in the shape of Leeds United, who were rumoured interested in him during the January winter transfer window just gone, according to a report in Scottish media publication the Daily Record.

According to the Record at the time, Leeds United had sent a scout up to watch the young Jags academy product in a match against Dundee and had “compiled a dossier on the player.”

With Oxford’s interest rebuffed, at least for the present, there could very well be a small window of opportunity for Leeds United to nip in and steal a march on other sides. Leeds do need to strengthen in the centre of defence with it looking increasingly likely that Kyle Bartley will not be returning to partner Pontus Jansson, the Swede missing the first two games of the season due to a suspension carry over.

However, BBC Sport end their report of the transfer talks breakdown by saying that Lindsay “is content to stay with the Jags for now.”
