Leeds United to appoint Bañuelos as assistant – Clotet to go – fans respond

As reported already by The 72, following an article in Spanish publication Siete Semanal, Leeds United fans have learned the identity of their new assistant to recently appointed head coach/manager Thomas Christiansen – it’s Julio Banuelos.

Siete Semenal say that Bañuelos, who used to manage CD Mirandés – a side in La Liga 2 – la Segunda, “together with Thomas Christiansen will be responsible for raising Leeds United to the top flight of English football,”

Whilst nothing has been confirmed Leeds’ end, with Christiansen himself yet to be unveiled before an eager press on Monday, it is both customary and expected that an incoming manager will usually bring with him his own backroom staff – most usually a trusted assistant.

That seems to be the case with this appointment, Bañuelos having been Christiansen’s assistant in Cyprus and with Siete Semenal saying of him that “after passing through Cyprus he has set a course for England.”

Of course, this appointment, should it be ratified, will effectively draw a line under Pep Clotet’s time at Elland Road. Clotet arrived as assistant to Garry Monk, impressing Leeds United fans with his humility and demeanour. Should this be the case, when confirmed there will be many Leeds fans taking to Twitter in complaint.

Leeds United to receive Banuelos as assistant, what of Pep Clotet? Fans respond to both on Twitter

The news that Thomas Christiansen is apparently bringing in his own #2 is to be expected, and it will draw comments across social media the more widely it becomes known. However, and adding to the possible criticism that will no doubt be building, is the fact that his arrival will likely be the clanging knell of Pep Clotet’s time at Elland Road.

If/As the news becomes more widespread, expect the number of comments on Twitter to grow, quite possibly with a change in tone to boot. At the moment it is early doors, come Monday that could very well change to doors flung wide open.
