Leeds United close in on Christiansen assistant manager appointment

The Siete Semanal understands that Julio Banuelos is set to become the next assistant manager at Leeds United. The Spaniard has served as number two to manager Thomas Christiansen at both AEK Larnaca and APOEL over the last few years.

This therefore essentially means that Pep Clotet is all but certain to leave the football club, unless he’d be prepared to take on a lesser coaching position at Elland Road. Banuelos is aged 46 and has previously managed himself at various levels in Spain, including the second tier outside of La Liga.

Given he has worked so closely with Christiansen over the last few years, striking up a successful working relationship, this likely appointment can come as no surprise.

Focusing on Banuelos in more detail, he has actually been on the books of Real Madrid as a player. He never mad the breakthrough into the first team at the Santiago Bernabeu but did enjoy a career in the lower leagues of Spanish football. He played most of his football with Mirandes and in the Real Zaragoza B side.

Looking towards his coaching career, his most notable role has been as manager of Alaves, after initially serving as the reserve team manager with the club. He enjoyed two spells in this vacancy, as well as a stint back at former club Mirandes, where he won promotion. Also, he guided Burgos to promotion too, but left a few months after that achievement. A brief spell at Olot following before linking up with fellow Spaniard Christiansen in Cypriot football, and now seemingly in Leeds too.
