Watford closing in on £5 million move for Derby midfielder

Watford are closing in on a £5 million move for young Derby midfielder Will Hughes, according to HITC Sport.

The 22-year old, who has been linked with moves to Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton in recent years, is expected to leave Pride Park this summer after spending the last six season in the Championship, and the Hornets are the latest side to show their interest.

Watford are keen to strengthen their midfield options for next season and Marco Silva believes that Hughes could be the ideal fit at Vicarage Road.

The former England U21 international has made 187 appearances for the Rams, and has been a mainstay in the side ever since the 2012/13 season. However the club’s failing once again to gain promotion may mean he is tempted to force a Premier League move.

It’s understood Derby and Gary Rowett are willing to cash in on Hughes to further their own transfer interests this summer, but some fans believe his valuation should be upwards of £10 million. It’s unclear if Watford would be willing to pay that price for a man who has never tasted Premier League experience.

It’s inderstood that Brighton are also in the frame to sign Will Hughes.

The player expressed his frustration to the Derby Telegraph last month at the club’s underachievement in recent years, and this may be an indication that he doesn’t see his future at the Rams.

“After we got to the play-off final having not really been expected to do much that season, the following season and the next one, there were always expectations that we should have gone up,”

“I think we have under-achieved massively in the last few seasons.

“Everyone knows it is not an easy league to compete in. It is difficult and it’s not a foregone conclusion that we should be in the top two.

“We have to earn the right and, unfortunately, we haven’t done.”
