Southampton considering bid for Middlesborough star

Southampton are considering a move for in-demand Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, according to HITC Sport.

Middlesbrough have a fierce battle on their hands to keep the 24-year old on their books following relegation to the Championship, but it’s understood that the club may be resigned to losing him.

Several clubs including Everton, West Ham and Leicester City are keen on Gibson, but Southampton are the latest to join the race according to reports.

Liverpool have also recently been linked with Gibson, with an offer of £20 million the likely fee to allow Boro to sell the player.

The Saints are expecting to lose Virgil Van Dijk this summer as interest grows in the Dutch defender, and Gibson is seen as an ideal replacement.

Gibson was a mainstay in the Boro squad last year, and was a shining light in a fairly solid defence throughout the campaign. He was rewarded for his efforts with a first call up to the England squad in March, and retained his spot for recent games against Scotland and France.

However, while the club know that losing Gibson is highly likely, The Sun has reported that Garry Monk’s first priority after coming in as new head coach at Boro is keeping the defender at the club.

The ex-Leeds and Swansea boss admits it is vital that the club keep Gibson in their push back to the Premier League in the 2017/18 season.

“It’s important to keep your best players. And Ben is one of our most important players. It’s crucial we keep him. He is a big focal point for this club and team.

“He’s integral to making that step back. It’s important to keep a core group together and give yourself the best opportunity of reaching the club’s ambition — a Premier League return.”
