Sheffield Wednesday defender confirms move back to Portugal

Vincent Sasso has officially left Sheffield Wednesday and return to his native Portugal after signing for Belenenses according to a report from the Sheffield Star.

The 26-year-old first signed for the Owls back in 2015, initially on a loan deal from Braga. He was a squad player for most of that year but was still signed on a permanent deal last summer due to a lack of defenders in the team, meaning Sasso was actually given more of a chance to stake his claim in the first team this season. Over his two years at the club, he would make a total of 33 appearances.

However he was only given a one-year deal and that expired this summer. Wednesday announced that he was out of contract but it was unclear if he was offered new terms to stay at Hillsborough. But while it will always remain unknown whether or not Sasso was given the chance to stay at the club, he has elected to leave South Yorkshire and return to Portugal.

He was elected to join Belenenses, a Primeira Liga team that would finish 14th in the table last year. After years of being in and out of the team at Wednesday, he will be hoping to stake his place to be a regular for the team as they look to move further up the table in Portugal’s top tier. Having played in that division a lot after playing for the likes of Beira-Mar and Braga, he will have a very good chance of doing exactly that.
