Monk targets Nottingham Forest man as his first Middlesbrough signing

Newly announced Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk is reportedly targeting a deal to sign Nottingham Forest talisman Britt Assombalonga, according to the Nottingham Post.

Bringing in a new striker is the main priority for Garry Monk, who was appointed as Aitor Karanka’s successor as Middlesbrough manager last week, and it appears he is wasting no time in getting down to business at his new club, launching a bid to bring Forest striker Britt Assombalonga into the club.

Last season, Middlesbrough scored less Premier League goals than Harry Kane, with their 5 wins a divisional low. Karanka’s side were the 5th worst team in Premier League history in regards to goal-to-game ratio, making it clear where the problems lay.

Defensively, Boro were solid, with Ben Gibson attracting attention from some of the Premier League’s top clubs with some outstanding performances, but after Alvaro Negredo, who scored 10 in all competitions, defensive midfielder Martin de Roon was their next top scorer with 5.

It’s hard to see Negrado wanting to stay for the Championship campaign and with Christian Stuani and Rudy Gestede looking toothless in front of goal, Boro could really struggle this season should they fail to add to their ranks.

Assombalonga, who joined Forest from Peterborough in 2014, signed a new 5-year contract last season, and with the bloated transfer fees flying around in the Championship, the former Southend and Watford striker won’t be cheap.

However, Newcastle’s gamble on Dwight Gayle helped them to promotion last season, as did Glenn Murray signing for Brighton, so there’s no reason why Assombalonga can’t fire Boro to promotion this time out.
