Rumour mill in overdrive as La Liga boss heavily backed to become Leeds manager

Espanyol head coach Quique Sanchez Flores has been backed into 3/1 to become the next manager of Leeds United with Sky Bet. Felllow Spaniard Victor Sanchez remains top of the list, but has weakened to 5/2, meaning there is little to separate the pair for favouritism.

This has again set the rumour mill in overdrive around Elland Road as to who will be the permanent successor to Garry Monk, who was officially unveiled as the next Middlesbrough manager yesterday. Flores was linked with the Leeds job prior to Monk’s appointment this time last year after leaving Premier League side Watford.

The 52-year-old has enjoyed a very productive season in La Liga with his current club. They finished a highly respectable eight place, narrowly missing out on a UEFA Europa League qualification spot. Many would be wondering why Flores would want to swap the glamour of Barcelona and the Spanish top flight for West Yorkshire in the hustle and bustle of the Sky Bet Championship. If the odds are to be taken for face value, then there is every chance he could do that. Flores played for Real Madrid in his playing days, managing the likes of city rivals Atletico, Valencia and Benfica in his coaching career too. Many felt he was harshly dismissed after just one season at Watford after leading them to a mid-table finish and the semi-final of the FA Cup.

Alan Pardew has eased in recent times, now available at 7/2. Jaap Stam is another name which won’t go away, despite the frequent comments of his agent saying he’ll be remaining at Reading. Pep Clotet is a name which has been around since the start of this managerial hunt, whilst Nigel Pearson is still looking for work after failing to get the Middlesbrough job ahead of Monk.
