Barnsley agree deal to sign Southampton defender

Barnsley have agreed a deal to sign Southampton’s Jason McCarthy for £200K according to a report from The Sun.

The 21-year-old defender came through the famed Southampton academy and would spend last season on loan with Walsall where he impressed. And these performances were noted by a number of teams that then looked to sign him, with Sheffield United being one of the teams reported to be interested in signing him. But it appears that McCarthy’s new home is already settled as one team has agreed a fee to sign him.

Barnsley have managed to beat their South Yorkshire rivals to the agreement of a deal with McCarthy as they have come to terms on a £200K deal that will see the defender head to Oakwell. While the defender is highly rated at Southampton, they’ve had to think about whether or not he will ever break into their first team, especially as he only has one year left on his deal. And with Southampton deciding to sell him, it was a great chance to sign McCarthy for Barnsley and get a very talented youngster in South Yorkshire.

The Tykes have had a good record with young players in the last few years with several of their youngsters breaking into the first team over the last few years. In fact, McCarthy will be seen as a long-term replacement for James Bree, an academy graduate who they sold to Aston Villa back in the January transfer window. And with McCarthy only being aged 21, he will have plenty of room to grow at Oakwell.
