Sheffield Wednesday starlet named in Team of Toulon Tournament

Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst has been named in the Team of Toulon Tournament as confirmed by the club website.

It has been an incredible year for Hirst, having made his senior debut for Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season and claimed honours when the Owls U23 side won both North and National titles. However the highlight of his year would have been their Toulon Tournament success, with the England U20s winning the competition again after a dramatic 5-3 win over Ivory Coast on penalties.

And Hirst wasn’t just there for the ride as he was one of the star players as England went on to win the trophy. He would score a hat trick in the stunning 7-1 win over Cuba then add another against Japan to help seal their passage out of the group stages. He would finish the tournament as the joint highest goalscorer with those four goals, tying with fellow England player Harvey Barnes, who currently plays for Leicester City, and Angolan Chico Banza.

And now Hirst has got another honour after he was named in the Toulon Tournament of the Year. He was the only striker put into the side that was dominated by England players with Barnes, Sheffield United’s David Brooks, Chelsea’s Reece James and Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall all being named in the team as well. For Wednesday it is a sign that Hirst, who is the son of club legend David, could well be a star for the club and may be able to break into the first team next year.
