Leeds dealt major blow in chase for £2.6 million rated midfielder

Leeds United have been dealt a major blow in their chase for Romanian midfielder Alexandru Maxim, according to German newspaper BILD.

The club have been monitoring the availability of the Romanian International for almost a year now, and with Stuttgart willing to sell up for a price of £2.6 million, it looked like Maxim may have been on his way to Elland Road.

However, it’s being reported that the deal is now highly unlikely, with Maxim reluctant to drop down to the second tier of English football.

The 26-year-old would’ve been an astute addition to this Leeds United side, having bagged 5 goals and 6 assists in 25 appearances last season, but a deal for the Romanian now looks unlikely.

Maxim is keen to give the Bundesliga another shot after helping Stuttgart to promotion at the first time of asking, with the club going on to win the second tier relatively comfortably.

A stalwart of the Stuttgart side since 2013, Maxim has some considerable experience behind him at just 26 years of age, having made 116 appearances for the German side, as well as earning 27 caps for the Romanian national team, scoring 2 goals in the process.

Uncertainty on the transfer front isn’t the only uncertainty surrounding Leeds at the moment, with the search for a replacement for Garry Monk set to continue following Radrizzani’s failure to attract Jaap Stam, one of the main candidates.

With Claudio Ranieri reportedly in talks with Nantes and Pep Clotet’s future still uncertain, Leeds will want to find some stability as soon as possible so they can begin to build on the squad left by Garry Monk.
