Newcastle United considering move for Chelsea midfielder

Newcastle United are considering making a move to sign Chelsea’s Lewis Baker according to a report from The Sun.

The 22-year-old midfielder came through the Chelsea academy but even though he is highly rated by them, he is yet to make an appearance for the senior side. Instead all of his first team experience has come when he has been loaned out to clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, the latter being where he spent the last two seasons.

And it was in this last spell where Baker really found his footing as he became a star player for the Gelderland based club. He has made 64 appearances for them over the last two years, scoring 15 goals and it ended up being a great year for Vitesse last season. They ended up finishing 5th in the Eredivisie, being higher in the table than teams such as FC Twente.

And this has led to interest from the Premier League as they look to sign Baker up from themselves. Bournemouth and Swansea City seem to be the teams most interested in signing the England youth international but Newcastle are closely watching the situation and are considering making a move for him themselves as they look to boost their midfield options going into next season.

But a deal for Baker won’t be done anytime soon. He is currently in Poland ready to the Euro U21 Championships and England U21 manager Aidy Boothroyd had banned any discussions with outside parties going into the tournament, meaning that Baker is unable to start talks with any interested team.
