European league champions plot move for Newcastle United goalkeeper

The Mirror reports that Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul is attracting interest from Belgian giants Anderlecht. The Pro League champions are keen on a loan deal for the Netherlands international, who last played for Newcastle in October 2016.

Krul has just returned to St James’ Park following a season out on loan at AZ Alkmaar in his native Holland. They narrowly missed out on a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League, so a return seems unlikely. Anderlecht are able to offer Champions League football, which could tempt the 29-year-old to make the switch.

Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are also on the books at the club, in what is a well populated area of Rafa Benitez’s squad. Despite that, the Spaniard is still said to be keen on adding to this department as well. Willy Caballero, recently released by Pep Guardiola at Premier League Manchester City, is one possible option. There is also Freddie Woodman too, who earlier today celebrated lifting the Under-20 World Cup with England. Pep Reina, who Benitez managed whilst at Liverpool, winning the Champions League, is another possibility too. This further drops Krul down the pecking order with the Magpies.

Rene Weiler mainly utilised Frank Boeckx at the first choice keeper at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock over the past season, but Krul would resemble a significant improvement in this area. As mentioned, the offer of European football could be a key factor for Krul. Although it is not for definite, the Netherlands may have a World Cup this time next summer and a regular season of game time would put Krul firmly in the thoughts of national team boss Dick Advocaat.
