Relegated Sunderland may not yet have a new manager in place but they have today unveiled their retained list. A total of seven names have been left off the list altogether, meaning that they are set to be leaving the Stadium of Light this summer.
This includes two that supposedly have been offered extensions to remain with the Black Cats. However the future of these seven is likely to depend on who the next manager is. These seven however are likely to be on the lookout for a new club in the time being.
The Sunderland Echo reports that John O’Shea and Sebastian Larsson, both among the seven, have been told that there is a contract on the table for them to sign. However both are likely to wait until a new boss is in lace. Veteran O’Shea and Sweden vice-captain Larsson have both been with the Mackems for a number of years, and could wish to seek a new challenge.
Former Bayern Munich man Jan Kirchhoff looks set to be moving on. The 26-year-old made just seven Premier League appearances last season. Will Buckley spent most of his time out on loan, ending the campaign with Sheffield Wednesday. It is no shock to see him exit the club. Ex-Man City and Everton man Joleon Lescott is another likely to leave after appearing just twice. Steven Pienaar was signed by ex-manager David Moyes, with whom he worked with whilst at Everton, managing to play 17 times as the club finished bottom of the table. Perhaps the biggest notable departure is that of Victor Anichebe. He only managed three goals but was a real fans’ favourite. A host of clubs are likely to be in line for his signature.
