Scottish giants Celtic watching young Championship full-back

Scottish champions Celtic are reportedly keeping tabs on 20-year-old Burton Albion left-back Ryan Delaney, according to the Irish Independent.

Delaney signed for Championship outfit Burton Albion from Irish side Wexford Youths for a nominal fee in the summer of 2016, but has been unable to break into the Brewers’ first team since he arrived at the club.

This season he was sent out on loan to League of Ireland leaders Cork City, where he lit up the division, bagging 5 goals in 17 games playing on the left side of a back 4 – an exceptional return for a young full back.

Cork City manager John Caulfield has expressed his desire to bring the 20-year-old back next season on a permanent basis, however, Delaney’s impressive performances have attracted interest from across the UK.

Scottish champions Celtic, who completed an unbeaten season under former Liverpool and Swansea manager Brendan Rogers, are also believed to be interested in bringing the Irishman into the fold this summer.

After the departure of Eoghan O’Connell, Celtic will be hoping to add some squad depth and Delaney could be an excellent squad player for Rogers’ side.

With the breakthrough of left back Kieren Tierney, Delaney will likely find first team opportunities limited should he opt to join the Scottish champions, but the prospect of a move to a club playing continental football could prove tempting to the Irishman.

The Brewers themselves enjoyed an outstanding first Championship season, upsetting the odds to beat relegation and finish in 20th place.

With one of the smallest budgets in the division, Burton boss Nigel Clough may even look to include the youngster in his first team plans next season.
